Forum Announcements v Quickmail

Forum announcements

Pros

Cons

  • Message gets emailed out to ALL staff and students enrolled on course
  • You can decide whether email goes out immediately or 30 minutes after initial posting
  • Easy to embed images and video into announcement
  • Message can be pushed via the forum and an email, under Recent updates and in the Recent News block
  • You can create different types of forum and decide it will be be forced subscription, auto-subscription, no subscription, or optional subscription
  • it is easy to create a simple announcement (How?)
  • Links to external URLs (for video, websites, pdfs on websites) are accessible via the email sent out
  • any internal Moodle URLs, embedded images or video or uploaded files are NOT accessible via the email (recipient is forced to log into Moodle to access all content)
  • email received does NOT identify sender or course (only course id is displayed followed by section > activity etc)
  • If an auto-subscription forum etc recipient can only change preferences while logged into moodle
  • We cannot stop students replying to forced subscription forum announcements
  • What constitutes a message relevant to all staff and students?
  • Email only goes once so if update a post no additional email is sent
  • Staff and students can elect not to receive forum emails
  • If students forward UAL emails to own emails , message can get lost in spam
  • Can only add one document (unless use hyperlinking in message content)

Quickmail

Pros

Cons

  • Quickmail emails can be sent to all students and / or all staff, all groups or selected groups of users (See How to use Quickmail andUnderstanding the Course Hierarchy)
  • Moodle keeps a record of what you sent, to whom and when (Quickmail history) – so have record even if students say did not receive it
  • You can save draft emails until ready to send (Quickmail drafts)
  • Email is sent from you (and replies go back to you)
  • You can resend an email from history if necessary
  • Links to external URLs (for video, websites, pdfs on websites) are accessible via the email sent out
  • Email is from you – no mention of whcih moodle course it may relate to
  • An attachment is accessible in the email
  • Only external URLs will open in the email
  • If students forward UAL emails to own emails , message can get lost in spam
  • Can only add one document (unless use hyperlinking in message content)
